The Yorkshire Derwent rises on the moors inland from Scarborough and a mere 3 miles from Robin Hood's Bay, but flows many miles to reach the sea via the River Ouse. The Derwent flows through Harwood Dale, Yedingham, New Malton, Stamford Bridge, Cottingham and then to the Ouse at Barmby. Royal Assent had been given to an Act of Parliament in 1701 allowing the Marquis of Rockingham to improve the river for navigation between Barmby and Malton - a distance of 38 miles. Further work to extend the navigation for a further 11 miles upstream to Yedingham was undertaken in 1805. (Priestley).
By 1904 Bradshaw's stated that the navigation was open only as far as Malton from Barmby. At this time trade on the river was reported to be very light, mostly only as far as Sutton Lock 16 miles from Barmby.
By 1962 Edwards reported only the first 15 ½ miles to Sutton Lock was generally navigable, while the rest was only then available to very light craft that could be portaged around obstacles. Edwards did however report a plan to create a Trust with the express aim of re-opening the whole length of the navigation.
Edwards did record that 2 of the numerous bridges over the Derwent were opening bridges, but offered no further detail.
In the 1970's Hugh McKnight reported that tidal length from Barmby to Sutton Lock 'are indisputedly one of the most attractive cruising stretches in Britain, although at present only small craft that can be portaged round the sites of the locks at Stamford Bridge and Kirkham Abbey can make the journey. McKnight reported that the section between Stamford Bridge and Malton had been abandoned for navigation in 1935, but that the Derwent Trust had been campaigning for restoration and in 1972 were able to reopen Sutton Lock.
In 2023 it was reported that the River is only navigable by small powered craft between East Cottingwith Lock and Barmby Barrage.
