This database almost certainly contains errors. Until I or a contributor has visited a site I cannot be sure whether a movable bridge exists, or has ever existed, at any given location.

In some cases different references may have used different names to describe the same bridge, so there may occasionally be duplications that I have not yet clarified.

In some cases I may have identified a bridge as movable that isn’t, or failed to discover a bridge that is movable. Again I am happy to be corrected!

In some cases I may have mis-stated the County that a bridge is located in - I am more than happy to be corrected. The re-naming of Counties and restructuring of boundaries has added to the complications in this area. As far as possible I have identified the traditional county name for the place where each bridge is located, but I am aware that I may have made errors.

I originally intended to photograph each bridge to record its condition in the first decade of the 21st Century, but in some cases older photographs may form an important part of the record.

I did not initially make notes of sites where bridges once existed but had been removed. I now realise that these are also part of the history of the subject and should be reported. At some point I will have to repeat the early part of the research process to find any that are not now in the database.

Each bridge has been allocated a unique number in the database, and there will be an individual record form for each bridge. This will link you directly to a report form for that bridge on which you can submit your data.

In addition to the individual bridge records I have begun the process of creating profiles of the individuals, groups and companies who designed and built all these bridges. These will be added to over time.
