General notes:
This was to be a bascule bridge. It would have had a total length of 75 metres with a lifting span of 35 metres. The intention was to create a new pedestrian and cycle path to connect Canary Wharf and the South Quay area.

Sponsored by Tower Hamlets Council who – after several years of discussions – planned to start work on the project in 2015 with a target date of 2020 for completion. There were various delays however and the Council eventually decided to cancel the plan in 2025. The total amount invested in the project has not been stated but a post by Andy Wood on Facebook suggests that over £2million was spent on it between 2019 and cancellation – although work had originally started in 2014. .

The cancellation is said to have have been unpopular with local residents and also with developers working in the area who had contributed to the planning and preparations for the bridge.

There is a very full description of the reasons behind the original proposal on the council website – #https://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/lgnl/planning_and_building_control/Infrastructure_planning/South_Dock_Bridge.aspx.
