Originally founded in 1888 as Nederlandsche Heidemaatschappij to work in agricultural land reclamation by 2026 the company has evolved into a worldwide organization with over 34,000 professionals driving sustainable infrastructure and urban development operating from 350 offices spread across 40 countries. International expansion began in the late 1950s. in 1972 it was divided into the Katalys foundation and the business firm, which is subsequently renamed Heidemij.
Heidemij merged with the North American engineering firm Geraghty & Miller in 1992 which brought access to the American Market. It was not until 1997 that the various arms of the company were brought together under the name Arcadis. Since then the company has continued to acquire other companies to extend its ‘global footprint and engineering capabilities’.
Arcadis prepared the designs for a proposed bridge at Rotherhithe on the River Thames which has not been built.
