This bridge was intended to create a short cut between Boscawen Park with Newham for pedestrians and cyclists. The plans had been developed by the Truro Town Deals Board with the promise of government funding. Cornwall Council had awarded up to £812,000 in match funding for the project. The planned bridge would cut about 2 miles off the journey between Newham and Truro town centre.
The contract for the design of the new bridge was awarded to PBWC Architects. The design they submitted was for a twin-leaf bascule bridge. A Council member had described the design as ‘iconic’ By 2024 the estimated cost of that bridge eventually reached around £.86 million – against the original planned expenditure of £4.59 million. This huge rise in costs was attributed to the rise of costs of materials and of construction. The council then announced a revised scheme for a swing bridge with an estimated cost of between £5.36m and £5.86m. It was hoped that the shortfall would be covered by Cornwall Council through Active Travel England funding.
Subject to planning permission it was anticipated that construction would commence in 2027 with completion in 2028.
In July 2025 Cornwall Live reported that their investigations had found that over £1 million had been spent on the abandoned plan for the bascule bridge.
